Mangrove honey is a global product, not a Florida one — and the geographical clarity matters because the trade and the wildlife are distributed unevenly across the world's mangrove forests.

The Sundarbans (Bangladesh and West Bengal, India) is the world's largest contiguous mangrove forest and the iconic mangrove-honey region. The traditional Mawali honey collectors wade into the tidal forest each season to locate wild Apis dorsata (giant honeybee) colonies in the mangrove canopy and harvest by hand — a practice passed down through generations and tied closely to the region's ecological and cultural identity. Sabancuy, Campeche, Mexico is the major Western Hemisphere commercial producer — Apis mellifera beekeeping in Avicennia germinans black-mangrove stands along the Gulf of Mexico coast. The honey moves through both Mexican domestic markets and US specialty importers.

Saudi Arabia (Yibyab Red Sea coast) and the United Arab Emirates produce Avicennia marina honey at smaller scale for the Middle Eastern market. Mangrove honey is well-known in Gulf cuisine.

Florida mangrove honey is a regional specialty available through Florida beekeepers and Gulf-coast farmers' markets rather than a national-distribution product.

Plant vs honey

Mangrove's historical human uses — salt, smoking wood, tanning bark — are about the plant. The honey is a separate product.

Mangrove forests have a long history of human use that has nothing to do with the bees: salt production from boiled seawater in shore evaporators, Rhizophora wood as a hot-burning smoke source for fish preservation, and Rhizophora and Bruguiera bark as a tannin source for leather curing. The dye and tanning trades carried mangrove wood across the Indian Ocean economy for centuries.

None of those uses transfers to the honey. They are extractive uses of the plant's wood, bark, and adjacent salt-pan ecology — not the floral nectar bees collect. A jar of mangrove honey carries the floral-nectar character of the Avicennia or Rhizophora bloom, mineralized by the saline coastal environment. It does not carry the bark tannins or the wood phenolics, and it does not have ancient human history as a medicinal product the way the bark and wood do.

Marketing claims around mangrove honey for "antibacterial properties" or "immune support" frequently lean on the plant's broader medicinal-and-industrial profile in a way that does not survive the plant-vs-honey distinction. The Islam 2017 work characterizes the Sundarbans honey's phenolic content and antioxidant activity at the in-vitro chemistry level; that is a chemistry observation, not a clinical claim. Characterized three Sundarbans-region mangrove honey types (Khalisa, Goran, Baen) for moisture content, pH, sugar profile, total phenolic content, total flavonoid content, and in-vitro antioxidant activity. Found measurable phenolic and flavonoid content correlating with antioxidant assay results across all three honey types. Caveat: this is in-vitro chemistry work specific to the Sundarbans region; the results do not extend to clinical health-benefit claims, nor to mangrove honey from other regions whose phenolic profile has not been similarly characterized.
