Himalayan cliff honey is harvested from the nests of Apis laboriosa, the world's largest honeybee species — workers reach 3.0 cm (1.2 inches) in body length, dwarfing the European honeybee (A. mellifera) at 1.5 cm. A. laboriosa is endemic to the Hindu Kush Himalayan range, building enormous open combs on sheer cliff faces at elevations of 2,500–4,000 meters across Nepal, Bhutan, and Yunnan Province (China). A single nest can carry as much as 60 kg of honey, hung in an exposed comb pattern that maximizes thermal access to the cliff face for the colony.
The variety's spine — and the page's editorial center — is the Gurung honey-hunting tradition. The Gurung people of Nepal's Annapurna and Manaslu regions have practiced cliff-honey harvesting across centuries of continuous tradition. How the harvest works. Honey hunters construct handmade rope ladders from vines and wood, lowering them from cliff tops above A. laboriosa colony sites. A specialist climber — the honey hunter, a role held with substantial cultural weight in Gurung communities — descends three hundred feet or more down vertical cliff faces while A. laboriosa colonies defend their nests, using long bamboo poles called tangos to manipulate the combs and smoke torches of slow-burning bark and vines to drive back the bees. Ground teams coordinate rope work; harvested comb sections are lowered in bamboo collection vessels.
The danger is real. Documented Gurung accounts include falls, severe sting injuries (climbers often experience thousands of stings across a single harvest), altitude sickness, weather-driven aborted harvests, and fatalities across the multi-generational record of the practice. Conservation organizations and Nepali Indigenous-rights bodies have documented the craft's vulnerability — fewer young Gurung men are entering the tradition; commercial pressures from tourism and from the international rare-honey market complicate the heritage practice's sustainability.
On grayanotoxin content. The Himalayan range carries Rhododendron ponticum, R. luteum, and related grayanotoxin-bearing rhododendron species at alpine elevations. A. laboriosa colonies that forage these species at flow can produce honey with elevated grayanotoxin content — this is the chemistry overlap that links some Himalayan cliff honey to the mad-honey category. The grayanotoxin presence is incidental and seasonally variable — not all cliff honey carries the elevated content, and the variation depends on the specific bloom mix during the harvest window.
