Cotton blossom honey is a monofloral honey from the nectar of cotton blossoms (Gossypium hirsutum), produced across the United States cotton belt.

A pale-amber, mild, fast-crystallizing monofloral from the Cotton Belt — Texas Black Prairie, Mississippi Delta, Arkansas Delta, Alabama, Georgia, and southwest into Arizona and Imperial Valley California. The honey rides on the post-cotton-gin expansion of the crop across the South; the plant's four nectaries (one floral, three extrafloral) keep bees foraging across the whole growing season. What it is

The South's big-volume monofloral with an unusual plant biology and a heavy history.

The cotton plant (Gossypium hirsutum — Upland cotton — dominates the US crop, with G. barbadense / Pima as a minor player) has four nectaries: one inside the flower, and three extrafloral nectaries positioned on the bracts and leaves. Bees forage across all four, and a single cotton blossom changes color four times in two days as it ages — bees track the change. The result is a long nectar window across the growing season and a varietal honey that does not depend solely on the few days of open bloom.

The geography is the Cotton Belt: Texas (the Black Prairie region is the dominant US source — by some beekeeper accounts, between one-fifth and one-half of all Texas honey is cotton honey in a strong year), the Mississippi Delta, the Arkansas Delta, Alabama, Georgia, southern California's Imperial Valley, and central Arizona. Texas total honey production was 7.4 million pounds in 2020 per AgriLife data; cotton is a major share of that total.

A note about cotton pollination economics: cotton is largely self-pollinating, and honey bee pollination services are an incidental benefit rather than a contracted input. There is no almond-style pollination rental market for cotton; beekeepers position colonies near cotton fields for the nectar flow, not for a pollination contract. This distinguishes cotton beekeeping from almond, apple, and blueberry economics.

Modern context shifts the risk profile compared to a generation ago: Bt cotton combined with the boll weevil eradication program has reduced pesticide pressure on bee colonies materially over the last decade. Some Texas Panhandle producers report not spraying cotton fields for years. The crop is bee-friendlier now than in the 1980s and 1990s.

And: cotton has heavy ethical history in the American South — the crop's expansion is inseparable from slavery and from the post-Reconstruction sharecropping economy. We do not romanticize that history. The crop's importance to Southern beekeeping economics is real and worth describing accurately; the crop's human cost is also real and worth naming, not glossing.

Why does cotton-blossom honey crystallize so fast?

Cotton-blossom typically crystallizes within about four weeks of extraction — among the fastest of any commercial monofloral. That fast crystallization is the reason most cotton-blossom honey is sold as creamed honey: rather than fighting the crystallization, beekeepers whip the honey into a smooth, spreadable, controlled-crystal form that holds its texture indefinitely.

Does cotton-blossom honey contain gossypol?

No. Gossypol is concentrated in cotton seeds, not in the floral or extrafloral nectar bees collect. The plant-tissue compound and the floral-nectar product are different things, and the honey does not carry the seed's gossypol. Cottonseed oil is refined to remove gossypol; cottonseed meal contains it and is fed to ruminants whose digestive system metabolizes it. None of that applies to the honey.
