Melipona beecheii is one of approximately 500+ species in the Meliponini tribe of stingless bees — small, tropical, eusocial bees found throughout the Neotropics, Southeast Asia, parts of Africa, and Australia. Meliponini species cannot sting. They store their honey in wax-and-resin "cerumen" pots rather than in waxy comb cells — a structural difference from Apis (the honey bee genus that gives us European-honeybee-produced honey) that drives most of what makes meliponine honey different from familiar Apis honey.
In the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico, the Maya have practiced meliponiculture — the keeping of M. beecheii in tended log-hive cerumen-pot colonies — for more than 3,000 years. Pre-Columbian Maya codices document the bee's veneration as Xunan Kab ("the Royal Lady Bee" / "the noble lady"), and the honey was used in pre-Columbian Mayan ceremony, ritual, and daily life. The tradition persisted through Spanish colonization, the introduction of European Apis mellifera in the 16th century, and (with substantial decline through the 19th and 20th centuries) into the modern era, when contemporary Maya beekeeping cooperatives are leading a documented Xunan Kab revival.
The honey itself is pot-honey — a categorically different product from Apis comb-cell honey:
- Higher moisture than typical Apis honey (often >20% water content). The Codex Alimentarius international "honey" definition requires <20% moisture, which means many authentic Melipona honeys technically fall outside the Codex "honey" definition — a regulatory consequence that limits international trade.
- Higher acidity (pH typically 2.88–3.91 per Brown et al. 2020, vs ~3.5–4.5 for typical Apis honey). The acidity produces the distinctive tangy, sometimes citrusy character that defines meliponine honey.
- Different sugar composition, including unusually high concentrations of trehalulose — a low-glycemic disaccharide present at up to 64–72% of total sugars in some meliponine honeys, vs <0.5% in typical Apis honey. The trehalulose-rich profile is one of the most distinctive biochemical markers of stingless-bee honey.
- Fluid texture rather than the viscous body of most Apis honeys, with very slow crystallization (high moisture, low glucose).
- Naturally fermented-leaning character — the cerumen-pot storage environment supports gentle lactic-acid fermentation that contributes to the variety's tangy character. This is a defining feature, not a defect or spoilage indicator.
The Mayan medicinal codex tradition. Pre-Columbian Mayan codices documented Xunan Kab honey as a substance of medicinal and ceremonial significance, with uses across centuries of Mayan herbal-medicinal practice. These are cultural-history references that the page acknowledges as part of the variety's deep heritage; they are not modern honey-as-medicine claims. The pre-Columbian use is real and culturally important; the modern commercial honey is a sensory and heritage product.
Melipona populations in the Yucatán have declined dramatically across the last several decades — by some estimates more than 90% in Quintana Roo across the past 25 years — driven by deforestation, agricultural pressure, and the broader displacement by European A. mellifera. The variety is critically endangered as a meaningfully scaled commercial product. Modern Maya-led cooperatives (Koolel-Kab, Nuestra Tierra, and others) are working to preserve the species and the meliponiculture tradition.
