Fynbos is the Mediterranean-climate shrubland vegetation that dominates the Cape region of South Africa — the southwestern tip of the African continent, the Western Cape province around Cape Town, the Cape Peninsula, the Cederberg, the Overberg, and the southern Cape coastal region. The name comes from the Afrikaans fyn bos — "fine bush" — describing the small-leafed sclerophyllous shrubs that dominate the biome.

The fynbos biome is one of six floral kingdoms on Earth — alongside the Boreal, Paleotropical, Neotropical, Australian, and Antarctic — and the only one wholly contained within a single country. It carries nearly 9,000 plant species, around 70% of which are endemic to the biome (found nowhere else on the planet). The Cape Floral Region has been inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004, recognized as one of the most biologically distinctive plant communities on Earth.

Three plant families dominate the nectar-and-pollen mix for honeybees:

  • Proteaceae — the protea family. Iconic protea, leucospermum (pincushions), leucadendron (conebushes). Many of these are commercial cut-flower exports as well as nectar producers; the bird-pollinated proteas are heavy nectar producers that honeybees work alongside the sugarbirds and sunbirds.
  • Ericaceae — heath family. Cape heaths (Erica species) account for the largest single genus in the biome — over 600 species in Erica alone, with a wide range of bloom windows.
  • Restionaceae — Cape reed family. Wind-pollinated and not directly a nectar source, but a structural and ecological dominant of the biome and a marker for the broader fynbos landscape.

The honey is dark amber, caramel-forward on the palate, with substantial body and a moderately long finish. The character comes from the biome as a whole rather than from a single dominant nectar species — different sub-regional fynbos honeys (Overberg, Cederberg, Cape Peninsula) carry different floral signatures within the broader fynbos category. Plant vs honey

The Cape has substantial medicinal-plant traditions. The fynbos honey is its own product.

The fynbos biome includes many plants with deep medicinal and culinary traditions — rooibos (Aspalathus linearis) and honeybush (Cyclopia species), which produce the world's primary rooibos and honeybush teas; buchu (Agathosma species), used in San and Khoi traditional medicine and as a flavoring; Pelargonium sidoides (umckaloabo) and Sutherlandia frutescens (cancer bush), both subjects of substantial laboratory and clinical pharmacological work.
