Erica arborea — tree-heath, brezo in Spanish, urze in Portuguese — is the tallest of the European Erica heath species, growing as a 2-7 metre shrub or small tree across Iberia, Mediterranean France, the Maghreb, and parts of East Africa. The plant produces dense clusters of small bell-shaped white-pink flowers in spring (March through May depending on latitude and elevation) and supports substantial honeybee foraging across its range.
Why Erica is its own page, distinct from Calluna heather. The Melvea catalog publishes a dedicated heather page that covers Scottish Calluna ling (Calluna vulgaris). Erica is a different genus, a different honey class, a different season, a different production geography, and a different cultural anchor. The four-axis separation:
- Genus. Erica is one of the largest angiosperm genera with ~800 species globally — a massive Cape-of-Good-Hope South African radiation plus significant Mediterranean and Atlantic representation. Calluna is monotypic — C. vulgaris is the single Calluna species. The botanical-scale difference is structural.
- Rheology. Erica honey is Newtonian — it flows like normal liquid honey and crystallizes within 2-3 months at room temperature. Calluna heather honey is thixotropic — it forms a gel in the comb that liquefies under shear (stirring, pressing) and re-sets when stirring stops. Calluna requires pressing rather than spinning during extraction; Erica spins normally. This is a structural-honey-class difference.
- Season. Erica blooms in spring (March through May in Iberia). Calluna blooms in autumn (August through September on Scottish moors). The two honeys come from different parts of the calendar year.
- Production geography and cultural register. Erica honey is Iberian and Atlantic — Portuguese rural beekeeping baseline, Spanish Cantabrian Liébana DO, Atlantic islands contributing. Calluna honey is Scottish, Norwegian, and northern European moor-and-heath — the Highlands, the Pennine moors, Scandinavian heath. The two cultural registers are different.
Honey character. Erica honey is medium to dark amber, with a viscous body, caramel-and-earthy-and-woody character carrying a faint bitter-resinous backbone (the bitterness is a real Erica nectar trait, distinct from Calluna's smoky character). The honey crystallizes 2-3 months into fine, soft crystals; the texture is unlike the Calluna gel set. The aromatic profile carries a wild Atlantic-Mediterranean register that reads of broom-and-heather scrubland rather than of clover meadows.
Antibacterial chemistry. Feás et al. (2013) characterized antimicrobial activity in Portuguese honeys including Erica — finding measurable in-vitro activity against test bacteria, consistent with the broader peroxide-dependent pathway shared across most honey types. The page is research-voiced on this: in-vitro activity is in-vitro activity; the honey is not a medicinal product, and Calluna's separate research register (with its higher-ORAC-and-phenolic-content findings) does not transfer to Erica.
The pollen story. Pires et al. (2009) characterized Portuguese Erica monofloral honey samples with 56% Erica pollen in melissopalynology analysis — meeting the standard threshold for monofloral status (>45% per the Bogdanov framework for honeys with low pollen-load species). The variety is a genuine monofloral by international standards in good Portuguese production, distinct from the over-represented-pollen issue that affects Cistus monofloral status.
