Now operating under the Local Hive brand, it remains a family-operated business in its 5th generation, committed to sustainable, transparent sourcing of American honey.

The Beekeeper's Story

In 1924, L.R. Rice began packaging premium American homegrown honey straight from the hive and selling it door to door in Northern Colorado, starting Rice's Lucky Clover Honey in his garage in Greeley, Colorado. The family business has spanned five generations, working bee yards, extracting honey, and building long-standing relationships with beekeeper families throughout the United States. From the beginning, all honey was run through cheesecloth rather than a pressure filter to retain the natural pollen and enzymes, and nothing is ever added. In 2017, following investments by Mission Consumer Capital, Centerfield Capital Partners, and Plexus Capital, the company rebranded from Rice's Honey to Local Hive Honey, emphasizing the local and regional origins of their products. The rebranded line now features 23+ varietals of raw and unfiltered honey sourced from more than 200 beekeepers across various U.S. states and regions, each with a distinct flavor profile tied to its local flora. The company is also partnered with PACE (Pollinator Awareness Through Conservation and Education) and donates a portion of proceeds from every bottle to support pollinator conservation worldwide.
