Schefflera abyssinica — the Ethiopian highland getem tree — is a large canopy member of the Araliaceae family, growing across the southwestern Ethiopian highland forests (Kafa, Sheka, Bench-Sheko, Jimma zones primarily, with significant contributions from the broader southwestern montane forest belt). The tree carries dense umbel inflorescences of small whitish flowers in the late dry season (March-May) and supports substantial honeybee foraging during the brief intense bloom.
The honey is one of the premium Ethiopian monoflorals. Getem is pale amber to light amber in color, with a soft floral-dominant character, a quiet fruity middle, and a clean finish. The variety carries the highest quality grade in the Ethiopian honey-quality framework — Grade A — and is one of the most-prized honeys of the Ethiopian beekeeping tradition.
Production geography and the Apis mellifera simensis forager. Schefflera honey is produced across the southwestern Ethiopian highland forest belt by Apis mellifera simensis, the Ethiopian honey bee subspecies adapted to highland conditions (Meixner 2011, Apidologie). The bees forage the canopy bloom from traditional log hives (qafo), modern movable-frame hives, and increasingly from transitional intermediate-frame production. Kafa, Sheka, Bench-Sheko, Jimma, and adjacent zones are the production heartland.

Deforestation sensitivity. Schefflera is a canopy tree of the southwestern Ethiopian forest belt — one of the most ecologically pressured forest systems in East Africa. The honey supply depends on continued forest health, and getem honey production reads as ecologically embedded rather than as an industrially scaled commodity. Forest conservation programs in the Kafa Biosphere Reserve and adjacent protected areas are part of the long-term supply story.
TEJ honey-wine context. Ethiopia carries one of the world's deepest fermented-honey traditions — tej, the honey-wine made from raw honey and gesho (Rhamnus prinoides) leaves, is a foundational Ethiopian beverage. Getem and the broader Ethiopian highland monofloral honeys appear both as table honey and as a tej base — the premium pale character of getem lends itself to high-tier tej production where the honey character carries through the fermentation.
