Each certification was built to answer a different question — Was it produced cleanly? Is it genuinely from where it claims? How much of a marker compound is in it? How little was it processed? A badge is only useful once you know which of those questions it speaks to, and which it stays silent on. Read them that way and the aisle gets simple: match the badge to the question you actually have.
What each certification actually verifies

No single badge answers every question. A certification can be rigorous on origin and silent on processing, or vice versa — which is why the columns matter more than the count of seals.
“Raw,” “Unpasteurized,” and “Pure” are descriptions, not certifications.
“Raw” generally means the honey was not heated above a stated threshold (often cited near 118°F, though it varies), which is meant to preserve enzymes and pollen. “Unpasteurized” means it skipped the standard high-heat step some large producers use. “Pure” implies nothing was added. All three are useful as intent — but none is independently tested or defined by a certifying body, so any of them can appear on a label without verification behind it. They are most trustworthy alongside a producer you already trust, or paired with a measured signal like KFactor that puts a number on the processing claim.

How many questions are answered

More badges help only when they answer different questions. Three certifications that all verify the same thing add less than two that cover origin and processing.
A real certification leaves traces you can check.
A certification number or code, the issuing organization or testing lab, and often a date — since certifications expire and renew. UMF honey should show a specific number (UMF 15+) and ideally the MGO value beside it. True Source products carry a logo and a code verifiable on the True Source registry. When a honey leans on its certification as the reason to choose it, spending thirty seconds verifying that certification on the issuer's site is the single most useful check a shopper can do.

Is organic honey better than non-organic?+
Not necessarily — “better” depends on your question. Organic verifies how the honey was produced (no prohibited inputs), not whether it is authentic or minimally processed. For purity of source, look to True Source; for processing, KFactor.
Does a UMF number tell me how good the manuka is?+
It tells you the honey is genuinely manuka and grades its MGO level against a standard. Read it as a verified grade of a real manuka honey — not as a measure of what the honey will do for you.
What is the difference between UMF and MGO?+
MGO measures one compound directly, in milligrams per kilogram. UMF grades the same compound and pairs it with pollen analysis confirming authentic manuka — so UMF answers the authenticity question that MGO alone does not.
Is “raw” honey certified?+
No. “Raw,” “unpasteurized,” and “pure” are descriptions without an independent testing body behind them. KFactor is the closest objective stand-in for the processing claim “raw” implies.
Why would honey have its pollen removed?+
Ultra-filtration produces a clear, slow-to-crystallize product — but it also strips the pollen used to verify origin. The result can be perfectly good honey whose source can no longer be confirmed.
How do I verify a certification is real?+
Look for a code or number, the issuing body, and a date, then check it on the issuer's website — True Source and UMF both maintain registries. A printed logo alone is not proof.
If I can only look for one thing, what should it be?+
For manuka, a UMF number. For everything else, True Source Certified — it answers the origin-and-adulteration question most shoppers actually have.
