The Beekeeper's Story
In 1921, five beekeepers near Sioux City, Iowa pooled approximately $200 and around 3,000 pounds of honey to form the Sioux Honey Association, a cooperative designed to help small beekeepers share equipment, marketing, and processing facilities. The company was co-founded by Ed Brown, a 27-year-old beekeeper from Sergeant Bluff, Iowa. In their first year, they sold 20,000 pounds of honey at about 10 cents per pound. By the 1960s, the association developed the Sue Bee brand, which grew to national prominence. Today, the co-op has grown to 190+ independent family beekeepers spread across more than 30 states, many of them third- and fourth-generation members. Sioux Honey Association has become the world's largest honey marketing organization, with production facilities in Sioux City, Iowa, Waycross, Georgia, and Anaheim, California, and a global presence extending to the Middle East, Far East, Europe, and South and Central America.
