Mayi Harvests is an Indigenous Australian-owned and operated native foods business based in Broome, Western Australia, founded by Djugun Elder Patricia 'Mamanyjun' Torres. The business specialises in the sustainable wild harvesting of Australian native bush foods — including Kakadu Plum, boab fruit, bush spices, and native teas — from the West Kimberley region, following the six traditional seasons of the Kimberley. While honey is referenced culturally (the word 'Mayi' encompasses honey and sap alongside plant foods), Mayi Harvests is primarily a native bush food producer rather than a dedicated honey farm.
The Beekeeper's Story
Mayi Harvests was established in 2006 as an Indigenous cooperative to supply wild-harvested Kakadu Plum 'Gabiny' and other native fruits and seeds from the Kimberley's Ngumbarl and Jabirr-Jabirr country. The name 'Mayi' comes from the Djugun/Yawuru language of the West Kimberley, meaning bush foods derived from parts of plants including seeds, fruit, nuts, honey, and sap. Founded by Aunty Pat Mamanyjun Torres — a woman connected to seven traditional language groups — the business grew from a family outstation tradition of wild harvesting into a nationally supplying enterprise offering freshly frozen and dried native produce, jams, chutneys, bush spices, and cultural experiences. Mayi Harvests follows traditional methods of hand-picking produce in small batches across the Kimberley's six seasons to ensure sustainability and cultural continuity. The business provides seasonal employment opportunities to Indigenous people across the Dampier Peninsula and actively works to preserve traditional language, land management knowledge, and cultural practices. Products are supplied all over Australia, and the business also offers native foods workshops, Welcome to Country ceremonies, and immersive cultural tours.
